Chris Shockley, president and CEO of Virginia Credit Union, will serve as the keynote speaker at the VCU School of Business commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 10, at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.

A Roanoke native, Shockley began his career in banking as a teller while studying economics at Radford University. After 14 years in various leadership roles for national banks, he joined Virginia Credit Union in 2003 and has led the organization as president and CEO since 2016. Today, the Richmond-based credit union serves nearly 500,000 members and holds more than $7 billion in assets.

His selection as keynote speaker reflects a longstanding relationship between VACU and VCU. In 2019, the credit union committed $5 million to establish the VCU Financial Success Center by Virginia Credit Union, a partnership that has since earned national recognition — including the 2024 Outstanding Financial Counseling or Planning Center Award from the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education.

Under Shockley’s leadership, VACU has earned accolades for its financial education initiatives and workplace culture. VACU’s award-winning financial education programs reached more than 130,000 people in 2025, and the organization earned Gallup’s Exceptional Workplace Award, which recognizes the world’s most engaged workplaces, for the fourth consecutive year in 2026.

Shockley is an active community leader and has held various board leadership roles with the Virginia Council on Economic Education, the YMCA of Greater Richmond, and the Virginia-West Virginia Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
