We’ve developed a unique global experience to help your impress future employers with resumes and skillsets that showcase international business experience.
The International Consulting Program gives your the opportunity to travel to exciting countries, experience different cultures and work with companies locally and abroad while earning credits towards their degree. This program will boost your resume, your confidence and your ability to think globally.
The six-week program is offered during the summer to undergraduate and graduate students, and includes three modules:
The International Consulting Program begins in Richmond with a three-week course that gives you the tools needed for the international consulting project in your host country.
You’ll receive training and academic instruction on business communication, consulting and the language and culture of your host country. You’ll also work on a consulting project for a local business with a group of your peers.
International consulting project
Following the pre-trip course in Richmond, you’ll depart for your host country. While abroad, you’ll work with VCU Business students as well as students from the host university on consulting projects for local or international companies. Previous companies students have worked with include Pepsi, UNICEF, OPERA Solutions, high end hotels and restaurants, IT Solutions, start up incubators, local chambers of commerce and local sports teams.
During your time in the host country, you’ll also have the opportunity to explore the local community and experience the culture through weekend excursions, trips to local museums and other cultural institutions.
Following the consulting project abroad you will have approximately 10 days to write a final reflection paper on your experience. While some students return to Richmond to write their reflection paper, many students opt to continue their travels and write their paper while abroad. We encourage you to keep a journal or blog while on the trip to better prepare yourself for writing the reflection paper and to have as a record of your travels.
The cost for both undergraduate and graduate students is $1,500 plus summer tuition for six credits.
Other costs include airfare, meals and incidentals (some meals may be provided) and personal travel beyond the program.
The first 20 students to register for each site will be given a $750 award. Apply for the 2018 Sharon and Baxter Phillips Need Based Scholarship. Scholarships may also be available for the 2018 program - check the Global Education Office for funding options.
