Once students have been accepted into the program they will attend two mandatory meetings in the spring semester.
In February, they will attend a program introduction meeting where they will have the opportunity to meet other students and faculty members involved in the program. During this meeting students will also begin to go over logistics including travel information such as passports, visas, airfare, etc. This meeting will also cover expectations and the time commitment for each portion of the program.
In April, they will attend a planning meeting with all students and faculty going to each country. During this meeting they will go over, in more detail, information about the specific site they will be traveling to including country information and a travel checklist. This meeting will give students an opportunity to get to know the group they will be traveling with while abroad.
From May 22nd to June 12th (May 22 to June 11th for Athens, Greece), students will officially begin the International Consulting Program in Richmond by taking a three-week course.
The academic content delivered during this pre-trip period will consist of business communication, language/culture/country specific training and consulting training. Students will also have the opportunity to work on a consulting project for a local business with a group of their peers.
This course is designed to provide students with the necessary tools needed for their international consulting project in their host country.
Following the pre-trip course in Richmond, students will begin the international course and depart for their host country from June 16th to July 1st (June 12th to June 28th for Athens, Greece; July 14th to July 29th for Bangalore, India). While there they will work with VCU Business students as well as students from the host university on consulting projects for local or international companies. Previous companies students have worked with during their consulting assignments have included Pepsi, UNICEF, OPERA Solutions, high end hotels and restaurants, IT Solutions, start up incubators, local chamber of commerce and local sports teams.
Students will work with the company on a problem or need they are facing. Previous consulting assignments have included:
During students’ time in the host country, they will also have the opportunity to explore the local community and experience the culture through weekend excursions, trips to local museums and other cultural institutions.
Following the consulting project abroad students will be required to write a final reflection paper of their experience from July 1st to July 10th (June 28th to July 7th for Athens, Greece; July 29th to August 7th for Bangalore, India). While some students return to Richmond to writer their reflections paper, many students opt to continue their travels and write their paper while abroad. We encourage students to keep a journal or blog while on the trip to better prepare them for writing the reflection paper and to have as a record of their travels.
