The Writing Center
Academic Learning Commons
1000 Floyd Avenue, 4th floor
Monday - Thursday 9am-9pm
The Writing Center is located on the 4th floor in the Academic Learning Commons, the new building next to Cabell Library, at 1000 Floyd Avenue.
The Writing Center is a peer-based learning support service for currently-enrolled VCU students. Their primary focus is to help students become the strongest writers possible. As such, they do not edit or proofread papers, but rather discuss big picture issues such as structure, organization, and how to best articulate your ideas. Writing Center Staff will help students sort out what they want to say, and how to say it, so that it makes sense to readers and clearly expresses ideas.
The Writing Center's hours for the spring 2016 semester are Monday through Thursday from 9:00am - 9:00pm, on Fridays from 9:00am - 6:00pm. Some walk-ins can be accommodated, but appointments are preferred and can be made in person or by phone by calling (804) 828-4851. Online appointments are also available, but require at least an hour notice. You must specify that you want to schedule an online consultation at the time that you schedule. Please visit http://uc.vcu.edu/learning-support/writing-center/online-consultations/ for more information about online appointments.
Students enrolled in UNIV 111, 112, or 200 may visit the Focused Inquiry Learning Lab, located on the 5th floor of Harris Hall on Tuesdays from 3:00pm - 6:00pm and Thursdays from 12-3.

Check the drop-in tutoring schedule for other courses.
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a peer-assisted study session. SI was designed to assist students in courses that have proven to be difficult. SI leasers are students who have previously taken the class, and who attend the current class, take notes, read the text and conduct three SI sessions each week. These sessions are open to all students in the class. Typically, Supplemental Instruction is offered for courses in the Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Political Science and Psychology.
Adjusting to college-level academics can be a struggle for many students. Some students perform very well in high school without studying, and are surprised when they are not as successful in college as they want to be. Other students may find that they are able to prepare very well for some classes, but struggle figuring out the best way to study in other classes. Other students are happy with their progress but are pushing themselves a little further to make their goals. Academic coaching can help in either situation!
Academic Coaching is available for all undergraduate students at the Campus Learning Center. Professional staff members provide one-on-one coaching sessions for students who wish to make improvements in order to help them reach their academic goals. Please call 804-827-8108 for more information and to make an appointment.
