The School of Business aspires to be the most technologically advanced business school in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The school is housed in Snead Hall, a contemporary, state-of-the-art building in which individual student power and data outlets have been installed in its tiered case study classrooms.
Entering freshman and transfer students to School of Business programs of study are required to purchase laptop computers if they do not currently own a laptop capable of meeting the minimum university specifications. Laptop computers provide students with a mobile computing environment. Laptop computers also foster team-building and collaboration in preparation for being part of the mobile workforce.
Combined with our advanced classroom environment, every classroom becomes an interactive learning environment with high speed access to instructional resources and the World Wide Web. In conjunction with VCU Technology Services, business students may purchase computers and laptop bundles at favorable prices from Apple, Lenovo and Dell. These computers are professional grade machines with full on-campus support and warranty.
There are certain advantages to choosing one of the recommended bundles. The university can provide on-campus repair and warranty work and also provide comparable loaner machines while effecting repairs.
Students who wish to provide their own laptop should carefully review the specifications outlined here. These specifications are acceptable to access the university network and operate instructional materials but it may be necessary to upgrade or replace your system in the future.
The School of Business strongly recommends that business students arrive with a PC over a Mac to be compatible with all instructional directives, tutorials, and information.
Recommended and required software can be obtained for a significant discount through the VCU bookstore or through JourneyEd online. The School of Business requires the latest version of Microsoft Office Professional Plus. This can be obtained at no cost for enrolled students from VCU Technology Services.
To protect your PC, VCU is providing students anti-virus software free of charge. Sophos Antivirus can be obtained from VCU Technology Services here.
It is recommended that you buy your computer a few months before arriving on campus to become familiar with it. It is also recommended that you buy a computer more powerful than the minimum specifications to offset obsolescence as long as possible. The recommended bundles should extend throughout your career, but new hardware and software developments sometimes make a computer upgrade and/or replacement necessary.
