The mission of the VCU Risk & Insurance Studies Center is to prepare students for careers in risk management, financial services and other areas of the insurance industry, by:
To prepare for a challenging career in the risk and insurance industry, our students complete a number of required courses to fulfill their curriculum obligations, such as: System Safety Risk and Insurance — Property and Liability Insurance — Life and Health Insurance — Employee Benefit Planning — Advanced Property/Casualty Insurance: Alternative Markets — and Managing Financial Risk. These courses examine a wide variety of topics designed to prepare for successful careers. Students graduate with a B.S. in Business, with either a Concentration in Risk Management and Insurance:Corporate, or with a Concentration in Risk Management & Insurance: Financial Planning Track.
Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS), founded in 1965, is the only international business fraternity for students interested in pursuing a career in insurance, risk management and actuarial science. The Faculty Advisor for the VCU GIS Alpha Mu Chapter devotes time working with the chapter members on a variety of fronts such as resume review, interview preparedness, finding internships and scholarships, and assisting with finding full-time employment upon graduation. Historically, insurance program students who are succesful academically and active in GIS are highly likely to graduate with job offers in the industry. In 2017, we will present the 11th annual VCU RISC Trends Conference. This respected event examines the trends and emerging risks in the industry in a half-day format filled with intriguing speakers and topics. Companies supporting the event are integral to the industry and vital to the VCU RISC Center. Conference proceeds support the program and fund scholarships to our students.
